What is AAC?

Causes: There is no single cause for the use of AAC devices. Some individuals may intend to use AAC as an augmentative form of communication to supplement existing speech, while others may intend to use AAC as an alternative mode to communication due to absent or non-functional speech. 

Treatment: AAC uses a variety of techniques and tools to help express all modes of communication. Some AAC options may include:

• manual signs
• gestures
• finger spelling
• tangible objects
• line drawings
• picture communication boards and letter boards
• speech-generating devices
